Now this isn't a bash against Ben it is a bash against an offense under Bruce Arians. People like to point out that Ben posted All-Pro numbers under Bruce last year and he did. However last year we played 5 teams with winning records and 2 of those teams were the Browns who were a major fluke. Ben also thrived in a game against Baltimore where the defense gave Ben a short field for I believe most of his TD's and the Ravens were with a banged up as hell secondary.
This year we've played so far 3 teams with winning records, so I'll start here..
Ben's stats this year against teams with winning records.
56.5 rating | 6.5 YPA | 2 td 6 int
Combining last year and this year against teams with winning records..
85.2 rating | 6.8 YPA | 13 td 7int
Take away Cleveland from last year...
77.9 rating | 6.5 YPA | 7td 6int
How has Ben been against teams with losing records this year?
119.2 rating | 8.8 YPA | 5td 0int
How has Ben been against teams with losing records the past 2 years combined?
112.7 rating | 8.8 YPA | 24td 7int
Ben's career numbers?
91.7 rating | 8.1 YPA
So in the last 2 years (so far) Ben has a better rating against teams with better records naturally). Take out Cleveland and it's drastically worse. His YPA is drastically down as well with or without Cleveland from what his career average rating is and his career YPA is.
All good and great, but how did he do before that to say that Arians stinks?
Ok, we'll throw out 2006 because Ben had some major issues that Bill Walsh couldn't have helped...
Ben in 2004 against teams with a Winning record :
100.2 rating | 9.4 YPA | 10tds 5int
Ben in 2005 against teams with a Winning record :
93.3rating | 8.0 YPA | 10tds 6int
Combined 2004 and 2005 against teams with winning records :
96.8rating | 8.7 YPA | 20tds 11int
So let's compare
Under Whiz in 04 and 05 against teams with a winning record :
96.8 rating | 8.7 YPA | 20tds 11int
Under Arians in 07 and 08 against teams with a winning record :
85.2 rating | 6.8 YPA | 13tds 7int
So, what we have is a difference of 11.6 in rating, a difference of 1.9 in YPA and a similar td/int ratio. Pretty big difference in general.
Here's something else that I thought was interesting. The Steelers and/or Ben rather played more games against teams with winning records in 04 and 05 than he has in 07 and 08
In 04 and 05 games Ben against teams with winning records - 14, losing records - 11
In 07 and 08 (so far) games Ben against teams with winning records - 7, losing records - 13
How he's faired winning and losing?
04 and 05 against teams with winning records - 10-4
07 and 08 against teams with winning records - 4-3
For these stats I left out teams with .500 records because they could be included for both stats against teams with plus .500 records and teams with sub .500 records.
It would take me forever to do even more stats but I know there's particular guy out there who most people know as an asshole that likes to blame Ben's poor stats on various other things and this asshole is a defender of Bruce Arians. One thing that he likes to point out is YPC for rushing.
So... under Arians against teams with winning records we are averaging a very respectable 4.2 YPC.
Now in 2007 we averaged a whopping 5.1 YPC against teams with winning records and this year so far are averaging a pathetic and meager 2.8. In 2005 we averaged 3.9 YPC against teams with winning records. In 2004 we averaged 4.2 YPC against teams with a winning record.
Together in 04-05 we averaged 3.8 YPC against teams with winning records and in 07--8 we have averaged 4.2 YPC against teams with a winning record. So let's not blame the run game for a lack of a passing game. Let's blame an offensive coordinator with his head up his ass.
