Verron Haynes-RB- Steelers Aug. 23 - 10:06 am et

Verron Haynes is reportedly battling FB Dan Krieder for the fifth and final spot on Pittsburgh's roster at running back.

The Steelers are expected to keep four tailbacks if Haynes doesn't make it: Willie Parker, Najeh Davenport, Carey Davis, and Gary Russell. Kreider would seem to have a much better shot at sticking because he lead blocks.

I can't imaging Kreider is on the bubble anyways...

http://www.postgazette.com/pg/07235/811494-66.stm

Surely we will run the I formation sometime this year.

Besides, hes a UFA next year... Give Davis or Russell the chance to ease in to the spot gradually and take it over completely next year.

Edit:  Unless the motivation is financial.  Kreider's cap hit is 1.16 Mil this year- and is only 210K if cut.

im pretty sure that has been the consensus the last 2 years.  His departure always gets pushed back another year.  its an annual ritual.

He must have sold his soul

You guys just don't get it.

It's in the Bettis book. The Rooneys were worried that Mark Bruener was going to blow up and become his generation's Ozzie Newsome. Then the cheap-ass-Ronnzie's would have to PAY him. Like, money, and stuff.

But those clever devils launched "Operation Namut." They brought in this guy who'd block for peanuts, and love it.

But that was years ago, you ask?

Well, let's revisit 2005. The Steelers, by accident, drafted Heath Miller (the dumber Rooney brother picked up the wrong card). Another guy they've clearly been keeping down, for fear that he'll get so huge the team won't be able to carry his contract.

Hence, Operation Namut Jr.

Connect the dots, man! And don't eat the Brown acid! If you read Bettis's book backwards, you learn all kinds of crazy shit.

Ya know, I think you're right.  I just don't think the coaches think so.

Maybe Tomlin will surprise us all.

I think Davenport plays like he's 185lbs and we need him to play like he's 250lbs.  I hope we send his ass packin and keep the others.

Yeah, I'd be in favor of keeping Kreider and Haynes and cutting Poop Davenport.  There's no way he's that much better than the other backs and he has no upside.

I like that Russell and Davis are in the mix. I don't know if Kreider has a better shot at sticking due to lead blocking. How much does BA intend on using one this season? Verron is clearly the better pass pro back, which could come in handy considering how much the OL blows. It would be ideal to keep both, but I would rather see Verron make it. He's cheaper and does more things than Dan. Why can't Spaeth or Heat/Davis block out of the backfield? It would make for some nice play action since the TE should be able to get out of the backfield without being held up at the LOS and work the seams. I don't know. I just hope Davis and especially Russell stick.
