Too early to be meaningful, but too good to ignore.
Offense
YPG - 7th (392.5). Hard to believe given the short field game against the Browns. Also have to wonder why Denver's barely winning at 455.0 per. Next two offenses after them: New England (419.0) and Indy (416.5). Those are some good offenses.
Yard per play - 9th (5.9). Skewed by some crazy offensive performances by Cleveland, for pity's sake, and Dallas.
3rd down coversions - 1st (54.5%). Surprised the shit out of me, especially starting the season 1 for 8.
Penalty yards - 3rd fewest (54.0). Most penalty yards? Baltimore, with 186(!). Now that's a well coached team.
1st downs - 11th (20.5).
TOP - 1st (35:52). Again, New England is close behind. Can't expect this to last forever, but still, it's cool.
Offensive plays - 5th (134). We're controlling the ball.
Defense
Defensive plays - 6th fewest, just behind NE. See offensive plays, above.
YPG - 4th (222.0). I remember when our secondary allowed 200 a game...
1st downs allowed per game - 2nd (11.5). Excellent.
3rd down allowed - 14th (40.7%). We know this needs tightened.
Penalty yards - 23rd (106.0). You know Tomlin will fish that stat out.

1st downs - 11th (20.5).
How does a team have half a first down? Or is this average per game?

The latter.
Figure that stat is skewed, too, by the Browns game. We had such great field position that we didn't sustain long drives, hence fewer first downs.

My son's team had 9 first downs the other night, to 7 for the other team.
We won, 51-7. Scored five times on our first play of the series.
I'd say that's slightly deceiving, especially considering our one-play drive vs. the Browns.

As with any stat, including yardage, it's not a be-all, end-all. The typical picture gleaned from more offensive first downs is that of the methodical, drive-down-the-field type offense. Of course, short fields, or offenses that chew up big chunks o' yardage make that stat less valuable.
Still and all, looking at the composite of the stats gives us some idea of where we've been good and bad.

I'll add one:
Turnover differential = +4 (Tied 1st in NFL)
Considering how that one just about single-handedly killed their season last year, I'd say that's a nice turnaround.

Relevant addition, that. As for Ben, where last year was he had 18 TDs to 23 INTs (a sickly .783 ratio), this year he has 5:1 (5.00), significant if it holds. I'm not expecting him to wind up the season with 40 TDs and 8 INTs, but I'll take improvement like that regardless of foe. I mean, hell, Raiders last year, need I say more.

That is soooo key. It's the difference. And as finny says, Big Ben has been taking care of business. Recently read that after his first two starts last season, he was 0TD and 5INT while he's now 5TD and 1INT. Even a head on a pillow could appreciate that.

We're only +3 on the year I believe.
