Who's bad idea was this? I no longer live in Pittsburgh and was on a few of our competitors forums and they were capping on this, I am sorry to say I can not even defend it. I was always proud that we did not have cheerleaders and that just added to our mean tuff image. However now I find out about this bit of marketing genius.

Please tell me this is a one season thing, it looks like someone made this costume in there garage.

Do they have any idea what they just did to us fans with this lameness?  My god the steelers are known for being a tuff team and now we got this thing skipping around the sidelines? :(

I respect everyone's opinion on the subject, but I'm a little surprised at the dislike of the mascot.

Can we all remember for just a second that many Steeler fans are little kids who may get a big kick out of this guy?

I will give you that point Hercules, but Steely McBeam? Why select a bad porn star name for a mascot? Surely they had better choices to choose from.

It's a hot night. The mind races. You think about your knife; the only friend who hasn't betrayed you, the only friend who won't be dead by sun up. Sleep tight, mates, in your quilted Chambray nightshirts.

Why not just go with the "Man of Steel?"  It has the tough-guy and porn-star image all rolled into one.

I agree that it wouldn't hurt to make Stiller games a bit more kid-friendly.  It's not much of an environment for younger fans.  But I'm not sure this is a great way to do that.

I'm sure there would be copyright issues with "Man of Steel"

Although I'm not a huge fan of Steely, I think Herc hit the nail on the head.

As a parent trying to raise my 2 year old daughter as the appropriate sports fan, mascots are very helpful.  Kids really dig the big foam creatures and it gives them something to identify with.

I don't get to many games in Pittsburgh, but at local minor league baseball games (H-Burg Senators and Lancaster Barnstormers) my daughter absolutely loves the mascots.

Hey i can see that. 'Steely McBeam' is a dumb name, no doubt.

I'm glad they went with a mascot while sticking with the no cheerleaders stuff.

Y2J told me that he frequently sees Steely down at the leather bar.

There were other options.

I'd rather have a mascot named Steely McBeam (or even Fondle McRod) than get my ass kicked 34-7 by my hated division rival. A beating so bad that they felt the need to trade their starting QB after 15 minutes of football.

OK Chris. Now that we have practiced kissing and cuddling, we'll practice eating out...at a fancy restaurant.
