Ernie Holmes, a two-time Super Bowl winner and an anchor of Pittsburgh's "Steel Curtain" defense, has died in a car crash. He was 59.

Wow, first I heard of this...

R.I.P. "Arrowhead"

I'm too young to remember him in his playing days but the story of him shooting at a state ploice helicopter with a shotgun is priceless.

What is it with athletes dying behind the wheel?

Didn't a couple others die this way in the past 2 or 3 years?  I'm drawing a total blank right now, but I coulda sworn one of 'em was a Steeler too.

Shame.

Strlzeczyck.  He was messed up, mentally.  Tragic situation.

Not sure who else?  Unless you're going back to Gabe Rivera.

Sad news...Holmes was an ordained minister?  I bet he kept people's attention from the pulpit!  I have very, very vague memories of his playing days.  IIRC, I remember him from the '77 playoffs vs. the Broncos.

So you're saying alcohol was most likely a contributing factor.

what a shame..how hard is it to wear a seatbelt??

I was a youngster when he was playing but I do remember the haircut and that my dad liked him alot. The Steel Curtain just lost a link.

RIP Ernie

I remember hearing a story about how Ernie challenged Andre the Giant to a fight once.  I think Ernie was training to be a wrestler and wanted to fight Andre just because he was huge.

Another loss for the Steelers.  RIP, Ernie.
