Pretty much had to.

You figure if Starks was going to be a hot commodity, he'd be signed now to another team.

What's curious to see is if he stays put, or with the Ben deal we are really letting him walk and retooling the line all together.

My guess is we resign him to a friedlier cap deal.  I guess that would alter our draft strategy unless the coaches lost faith in Colon.

And I'm presuming you mean we are rescinding the transition tag.

I would assume this means one of three things:

1.  We think the major money is spent and we can get Starks cheaper than expected;

2.  We're going to let him walk;  or

3.  We've got a pretty good idea that we have a deal in place to keep him.  Stay tuned...

Gotta be 3.  Why would we go to the extraordinary measure to transition tag him otherwise?

Or, the team transitioned Starks because they weren't sure when they'd get the Ben deal done, and wanted to maintain to rights to Starks for as long as possible?

I know they were confident about getting Ben's deal done, but they couldn't be absolutely sure when that would be. And there was always the chance that Ben would play hardball and the team would just choose to negotiate next year, or over the summer, or whatever.

If any of those scenarios came to pass, they would then play free agency very differently than if they had Ben's extension to add to the cap calculations.

Now that Ben's new deal has to be added to the cap situation, they have to re-think how they're handling Starks. Even if they have to withdraw the transition tag and make Starks a free agent, at the very least, they've bought time with which to negotiate with him.

My prediction: Starks is offered a ridiculous contract by another team, and he walks.

I believe it was recinded for cap reasons.  if what the post gazette says is true and we were only 2.5M above the cap...$7 Million Starks puts em over the limit.

The Steelers had only $2.4 million left under their cap, so it's possible they must rescind the nearly $7 million tender given to tackle Max Starks as their transition player.

there was a small blurb on the subject in the PGs article on Ben and his new Cartier shitter
