I went to New Orleans a few times almost 10 years ago so some things may have changed. If you are in the French Quarter it is pretty safe. A block out of it and its rough, we saved money by staying near the Super Dome one year. It was a scary half mile drunken walk back to the motel.
There are two bars connected called Tropical Isle and the Funky Pirate, which are not real special but one of them has a cool real little courtyard with a fountain in it, we finished the night there a few times.
Avoid talking to anyone you dont know on the street, its a scam.
Hey I bet you ten dollars I can tell you where you got your shoes!

Mother's Restaurant in the Business District is fuckin' awesome. My hotel was close to St. Charles and Canal and it was within walking distance.
There's a huge casino near the river (close to the Aquarium) that's ok if you're into that kind of stuff.
Cafe du Monde is highly overrated, IMO. It's hot, dirty, and coffee/beignets are just as good in other places.

Well, I'm back now. Avoided Bourbon St. (not easy when you're one block off it), tended to go out just off the quarter, particularly Frenchman St. Found a cool place called the Apple Barrel, a little dive with a phenomenal restaurant (Adolfo's, I think) above it. Other than that, as per the plan we sat by the pool and read and drank sazeracs.

When in New Orleans, it's best to avoid New Orleans.
