I can be very critical of officials, but hate mail?  This wasn't the Super Bowl.  This wasn't the playoffs.  This was week 2.  And your defense couldn't stop a 2-point conversion to win the game.

This ain't Phil Luckett, it's Ed Hercules.  In spite of this screw up (and it was a bad one), dude has a pretty good track record.

I know we'd be pissed if it happened to the Steelers blah blah..

But the more I think about it, it was basically a luck play. I mean, the ball slipped out of his hand and the defense ended up with what amounts to a sack. Cutler wasn't even touched.

Plus they had 3 chances to stop Denver and didn't. Including a 2 pointer (what's the success rate on those anyway?). It's not like they got jobbed on the scoring play. Or the 2 pointer for that matter.

These bad calls tend to even themselves out anyway.

Exactly.  No question the call was horrible, but I don't think I'd take the time to write a letter or email the ref.

And I admire the guy for responding.  Not all that smart, IMO, but admirable.
