It's a hot night. The mind races. You think about your knife; the only friend who hasn't betrayed you, the only friend who won't be dead by sun up. Sleep tight, mates, in your quilted Chambray nightshirts.

You can practically see the squirrels running around in his head as he realizes that his mouth won't stop the betrayal.

"I couldn't agree with him more ... er ... I couldn't disagree with you more .. ah .. fool me once, shame on you .. but you can't fool Joe the Plumber!"

Anyone see Letterman when he shows famous presidential quotes?  There will be a clip from Truman, Eisenhower, and maybe even a Reagan speech that is at least somewhat profound.  Then he'll play a clip from George W.  It will be him saying something really stupid like talking about visiting the Caterpillar plant where they have really big trucks.  So unfair, becasue those comments aren't from a speech, per se, but it is absolutely hilarious.

Yeah, those Letterman clips are funny.  And he has a bottomless well to draw from for inspiration, at least for a few more months.
