Steelers bring back Berger to punt
Monday, November 24, 2008
Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers have decided to bring back punter Mitch Berger as a replacement for Paul Ernster -- the second time this season Ernster has been waived in favor of Berger.

The decision to re-sign Berger, 36, has not been announced by the Steelers, but Coach Mike Tomlin said he needed to address the position after Ernster punted five times for a 28.5-yard average in the team's last game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Berger appeared in eight games for the Steelers this season, averaging 41.9 yards per punt, but he was released Nov. 5 because of hamstring problems in both legs. Ernster, who was with the team in training camp, was re-signed as his replacement.

Curiously, Berger was brought to training camp to compete with Ernster to be the replacement for injured Daniel Sepulveda. Berger won the job and Ernster was released in the final cut.

If this is the best option someone isn't doing their job. Have tryouts until the plane leaves for New England. We found Reed on a tryout, there's got to be some guy out there with a monster leg bailing hay somewhere.

I guess 40 yards a punt is better than 28.

Apparently Ernster and Berger are the only two punters on the face of the earth.  One can't punt past thirty yards and the other one has two blown hamstrings which I strongly doubt are fully healed and even when they were fully healed he wasn't very impressive.  At least bring in a handful of guys with the long vacation in between games and see what they have compared to Berger.

I feel bad for our defense.  I'm sure the explanation from the FO for this decision will be "Well, he can hold the ball for Reed.  He will probably blow out a hamstring or two and give the defense a short field every single time we have to punt, but he can hold the ball.".

Yay.

Great mental image of some former Cornhusker with one leg about 4X the size of the other working in the barn.

Does Mitch make it until the 2nd quarter Sunday, before he's toast again?

CFL season just ended yesterday. No cold weather punters available to grab up some USD?

Not to worry folks, Y(1x2)Joyce texted me the skinny yesterday that Berger showed up at camp in the best shape of his career.
