Well deserved, GO PITT!!!
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pitt.../s_605747.html The Pitt men's basketball team is No. 1 in the nation for the first time in the program's history, easily leading the Associated Press Top 25 poll released this afternoon.
The Panthers (14-0, 2-0 Big East) received 70 of a possible 72 first-place votes. They have 1,798 points, well ahead of No. 2 Duke (12-1), which received 1,660 points in voting by the national media.
Pitt also was No. 1 in the USA Today/ESPN poll released earlier today.
Pitt, which plays host to St. John's on Sunday, was ranked No. 3 in each of the past five weeks, but took advantage of No. 2 Connecticut's loss to Georgetown and North Carolina's 85-78 loss to visiting Boston College on Sunday night.
The other two first-place votes in the AP poll went to North Carolina (13-1). The Tar Heels fell to No. 3. Wake Forest and Connecticut -- one of record-nine Big East teams in the top 25 -- round out the top five.
Pitt had risen to No. 2 in nine different polls -- in 1987-88, 2002-03 and 2005-06 -- but had never reached the top spot.
