Wow. This is some crazy shit, even for the Bushie's. Most of Yoo's memos were rejected (some just days before Bush left office though), but it's truly scary to see what they were thinking in the 9/11 aftermath.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/187342/page/1

"First Amendment speech and press rights may also be subordinated to the overriding need to wage war successfully," Yoo wrote in the memo entitled "Authority for Use of Military Force to Combat Terrorist Activity Within the United States."

'At one point, the memo says, the U.S. military could be used for "targeting and destroying" a hijacked airline or "attacking civilian targets, such as apartment buildings, offices or ships where suspected terrorists were thought to be." At another point, the memo advices: "Military action might encompass making arrests, seizing documents or other property, searching persons or places or keeping them under surveillance, intercepting electronic or wireless communications, setting up roadblocks, interviewing witnesses or searching for suspects." '

Pretty fucked up.

Are we blind to the fact that many terrorists would argue that these kinds of tactics are what made them hate us in the first place?  Not that the terrorists are correct, but it seems that this would be pouring a trail of gasoline further out from a fire that's already raging.

Wouldn't these kinds of actions fall under the category of "letting the terrorists win?"

I understand that desperate times call for desperate measures.  But...If you allow a terrorist to force you to act like a terrorist, then doesn't that make you...a...terrorist?

If you read these memos, they are simply terrifying.
Basically, the bill of rights would be gone.  Probably including the 2nd amendment, because if civilians have guns, they can fight back....

All this time, I just thought he was dumb.  Turns out he's evil as well.

Well, roughly half of Americans probably still back these measures, and the Bush War, and on and on.  So yes, bin Laden won, in a single day.  Welcome to the land that used to be the United States of America.  Even if Obama is wildly successful, beyond my lofty hopes, I don't think we reclaim that: I think we remain Two Americas.

And that scares me.  The Other America, the Nightmare America, with Limbaugh as its mouthpiece, will destroy us sooner than "the terrorists."

It truly is two different countries, battling for the hearts and minds of the masses who are mostly somewhere in between the extremes.

Funny thing, considering our creation debate of the last couple of weeks.  Limbaugh seeks to woo "godly" people with his conservative rhetoric.  All the while he's spouting a vision of Social Darwinism that they claim to despise, and they're too stupid to realize it.  Or, they just don't care.

I'll put my money on "don't care."
