The Coyotes have struggled with Gretzky behind the bench and have yet to reach the postseason in his four years as head coach.
Great hockey player, horrible coach and basically the GM.
While Maloney is the GM, the decisions are all Gretzky's and ever since joining the Yote's organization, he has failed miserably. Moyes and Ellman should have sat down with Wayne a long time ago and told him to take a step down from both positions. Owning a small percentage of the team is fine, but calling the final shots and coaching the team are two things that he apparently is not very good at considering the teams lack of success over the years.
Outside of actually playing the game, Gretzky is guilty of some of the things that Lemieux has been guilty of from time to time. He's not allowing his GM's to manage and he's not allowing his coaches to coach. Both players had major success while playing the game and now they automatically feel they can manage and coach a hockey team. The difference between Lemieux and Gretzky is that Lemieux has gotten better over the years. He's now allowing Shero to call the shots and not criticizing every new HC he brings in (Bowman, Constantine).
