Looking for advice from the computer savvy

Has anyone used the website megaupload.com? Basically I purchased some study materials for an exam off of craiglist and was given a link to this site. I talked to the guy through a few emails and he had a good rep on paypal.

My question is can I save files from megaupload and then scan them for viruses before opening them? Or is there another way I check for viruses before opening the file? Also, what are people's experience with this site, if it is virus-heaven I may just cut my losses and look elsewhere rather than infecting my computer. I use kapersky antivirus if that helps.

Site Advisor hasn't fully tested the site yet, but there are a bunch of comments from other users. Might read through them to figure out what is what. My guess is that the site itself is OK, but any user could post a virus for others to download. Get that one, and you probably end up with a virus.
