No indication of a Bruce Arians firing, but following through on this particular (Reed cut) possibility would please this Steelers fan.

This douchebag needs to go.  Now.

It was a 20-yard fg.  I can make a 20-yard field goal, and he's upset because Burgh fans are "too tough" on him?

No.

The organization and the fans have put up with his BS because he's just an idiot kicker.  There is a line, and Jeff Reed is waaaaay over it.

I think that bringing in kickers sends Reed a message.  Still don't buy that they're cutting him.  Worst thing would be to cut Reed punitively and find out that the replacement is worse.

Any ideas on who a quality kicker might be that we could sign?

Stover, Suisham, the Czech (Piotr Something) and another guy are being brought in. IIRC, the Czech (or is he Russian or something else?) isn't that bad (in fact, wasn't he in Steelers training camp at one point?). Don't like the thought of Suisham. Stover, IMO, can do no worse than Reed at this juncture.

Saw reaction from Hoke and Foote on the CW this morning. Hoke said he was friends with Reed and hated to hear this, but understood it was a business. Foote didn't appear to be as strongly in Reed's corner, as he reacted with somewhat delighted surprise and said something along the lines of "Well, you gotta make those kicks. If you don't, this is what happens."

Yeah, let's spend some time this week creating the illusion that Reed's getting replaced. We don't have any other things we need to be working on.

At this point, you just get a guy that can kick it into the EZ and hit 50% and we're ahead of the current game.

I think the last time I saw that Czech dude was in the UFL or WTF it's called.

Get a vet - Stover kicked for the Ravens for a long time.  Don't know why they got rid of him but he was good.  If he's not finished, there's your guy.

Stover's 42, went to Indy for their SB year, solid on 40 and unders, about average on 50+, no notable injuries.  2008 and 09 were his worst % years in a decade (81.8%).

Sold.

Suisham's too inconsistent, had some big misses in big games.

Czech yr Piotr has a strong leg but was too inconsistent in camp.  He'd be a KO specialist only IMO.

I wouldn't mind taking a guy from College last year. Who's the best guy not on a team right now with a big leg (for kickoffs) and decent accuracy. I was looking at the stats, but the best guys seem to have stayed in college. I like the senior from Utah (Joe something) for next year.

It's official

Steelers cut kicker Reed
Tuesday, November 16, 2010
By Ed Bouchette and Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Steelers have released struggling kicker Jeff Reed and are expected to sign former Washington Redskins kicker Shaun Suisham, who worked out for them this morning, the Post-Gazette has learned.

Suisham, who was cut in by the Steelers in training camp in 2005, kicked at Heinz Field in gray conditions under the watchful eye of Coach Mike Tomlin and director of football operations Kevin Colbert.

In parts of four seasons with the Redskins, he converted 81 of 101 field goal attempts, a conversion percentage of 80.1 percent. In 12 games last season, Suisham made 18 of 21 field goals (85.7 percent).

Suisham also kicked for the Dallas Cowboys after being cut by the Steelers.

Hmmm...I would have taken Stover (based solely on Stover's and Suisham's past in-game performances), but I guess Suisham was more impressive at HF today.

I just hope that - very much unlike Reed - he is willing to sacrifice his body to make a tackle if - very much like Reed - he kicks it to the 10 repeatedly and allows big-time KRs.

I wish him well, he was a helluva kicker and an entertaining guy before it went south.  That said, he should have enough money to keep him in liquor and funny haircuts for as long as he needs.  Good luck, bud.

Welcome aboard, Shazam!

I would rather not see him on a team we have to face again.  Oh well.

Would have preferred Stover.  Familiar with Heinz Field, and more consistent than Sushi-zam.

Whatever.  Still doesn't fix the offense.

True, but it gets rid of the bucket of cold water after a long drive.  It's not just this year, Reed has missed some key FGs going back to last season as well.  Some were game killers and others were major downers when the offense was trying to establish a little momentum.  If Shazam! can come in and perform same as an average NFL kicker, the Steelers are golden.

He lost one of the Bengals games last year too. Think about it, he almost gagged away the Atlanta and Cincy games this year. Imagine being 4-5 because of his horseshit. Then he has the gall to badmouth the fans, complain about the turf, and wear a "haters gonna hate" shirt to his press conference.

Good riddance.

Heard on radio this morning that Suisham was the only guy they brought in. They didn't use a long snapper or anything like that to remotely simulate a game situation.

Josh Miller (who I think has a crush on Reed) used the analogy of the Steelers ditching a Porsche, going shopping at a used car lot and buying some kind of POS car. He also keeps stating how getting rid of Reed won't address the offense's inability to score, the OL's inability to do anything right or the D's ability to keep people from scoring. He loves being in the kicking/punting fraternity, apparently.

I don't think the Steelers consider this any type of fix. Dude they brought in is a pretty shitty kicker, no? But he's Canadian, so you know he'll be able to handle the juice a little better.

Wasn't Jeffy gonzo after this season anyhow? So he left 7 games early.

I think it's just a case of growing weary of Reed and cutting him loose. Will Shaun (88%) be back next season? Doubt it.

Suisham fucking sucks as FG kicker.  He will cost us a game this year, uness this means we're going for it every fourth down outside the 25 yard line.

Which, fwiw, would be fine be me anyway.

Exactly.

This particular radio show (on 93.7 in PGH) positions him as its "NFL analyst." I've not been listening to it for long, but he gets on my nerves to the nth degree. Such a smug D-B. Funnily enough, when the non-athlete co-host referred to the OL as the offensive line, Miller responded "You call it the OL - we call it the trenches" - as though other players would consider him/a punter their equal. Ha.

While Swish won't be as good as Reed was, as an overall work, he has to be better than Reed this season.

Great point that we're talking about 7 games w/o Reed, though if we're in the post-season, Swish hasn't shown the propensity to hit 'em.

I was getting nervous every time Reed came in.

I recall Reed's problems starting last year, against the Bears.  Seems like he missed at least one crucial kick that game.  It happens.  It didn't seem to get better.

With Ward's streak over, shouldn't we bring back Gardocki in order for the commentators to have something to speak about during the game?

Maybe it wasn't such a good idea for Reed to stop drinking.

Maybe he had better control when he had less control, so to speak.
