I'm going to try to stay on top of this, but my dad is ill and I'm going back and forth between NYC and Pittsburgh.  If I miss a day, anyone can feel free to update it.

Also, I'll worry about the top of the standings when/if Philly catches up in GP.

4. PIT GP 68 W 39 L21 OTL 8 PTS 86
5. TB 66 37 21 6 82

Tonight
BUF 1 PIT 3

Got a coupla firsts out of the way.  Good to see Letestu stepping up tonight, 'cause we need a #1 center.  I wonder if he can play the point on the power play.

Sorry to hear about your dad Penso, hope he's feeling better soon.

I'm just impressed with the effort this team has given in Sid's absense.  Everyone has stepped up their game.  It may not show up on the box scores each night but to a man, they bust their ass every shift.  This team doesn't know the meaning of the word quit.

Thanks, dude.  There's not much chance of any kind of full recovery (he's been in AGH more or less since Thanksgiving) but we're hoping he can come home at some point.

Anyhoo... I am amazed at the transformation of this team into a physical force.  I'm sure we're all old enough to remember getting pushed around by the Flyers, Rangers, and just about every western conference team; more recently, the Caps have taken their shots.  Now, we lead the league in hits (the most BS stat in all of sports, but whatevs) and PIM, have guys in all three weight classes who can throw 'em with about anyone, and with Neal and Kunitz and Rupp and Adams, a violent forcheck on every shift.

Gone are the days of Laraque and 24 lightweights, and if we have success in the playoffs, it will be because we outwork and outhit the opposition.

Sorry about your dad, man, good luck.

Huge 2 points last night. Neal was the best player on the ice, also great to get Kunitz back in action, really noticed him out there creating havoc. The powerplay is still a trainwreck and I honestly think they should scrap the idea of trying to run their base sets and use the Red Wings model of throwing everything they can at the net and creating traffic. Letang-Martin points, Kovy on the half-board, Neal in the slot and Kunitz in front. Just fire away and pray baby.

Even with the lack of offensive firepower I still think they can beat any team in the east in a 7 game series except Philly. The west is another story however.

let's go Pens. Get well, Mr Hatcher.

I'd love to play TB in the first round. All home games either way.

If Crosby comes back it's all over for everyone. If i've said it once then...I've said it, and he's the best NHL player ever. Leave the kid alone. Let him heal. But if he comes back? cups cups cupscups cupscupscups cups.

Fleury's the best goalie in the league.

I never thought I'd miss Malkin so much.

Yeah they are my number one choice but part of me wants Washington. Beating those fucks again (possibly without Crosby) would be fantastic.

If he can get back to game condition without any setbacks, this should greatly enhance our playoff hopes!

Huge fucking 2 points last night. (well I guess they all are at this point).

On a different note, I seriously can't believe NJ is only 6 points out of a playoff spot after the start they had. I have to say as much as I dislike that franchise and it's lame-o trap I'm rooting for them to get in over Buffalo. I'd like NJ over Buffalo against washington or philly at this point.

Can't disagree with that, just NJ is red hot and seem to be that team no one would want to play. Philly is kind of stumbling down the stretch and we all know what a bunch of playoff failures the Caps are. Wouldn't surprise me to see NJ or Buffalo knock either off although I still think Philly is the best team in the east.

Of course there is no rhyme or reason to NHL league discipline.  Makes Goodell look like King fucking Solomon.

Having said that, immediately after the hit, I thought to myself "I hope Lemieux adds a team punishment to whatever the league gives." That's unnecessary now, but Cooke does deserve everything he gets.

Apparently Mario had a meeting with Cooke and told him to make some changes or he won't be on the team anymore.

I love the guy as a player, but this act has gotten really old. He probably cost them 2 points yesterday and he's not going to be an easy guy to replace come playoff time. He HAD to know he's the poster child for the rule changes and that all eyes are on him and he still blantantly cheatshots someone.

That said I can't argue with the 10 game suspension but I think the playoff suspension is a little excessive. That's almost as much time as Bertuzzi got for much worse.

The Cooke hit was just fucking unnecessary. Not only did he guarantee himself a lengthy suspension, but he also cost us a valuable points. If Sid can't make it back by playoff time, we're gonna need home ice against Tampa. Cooke is one of our best penalty killers too, and he can't kill penalties when he needlessly takes himself out of games. Dude needs to straighten up.

Having said that, he deserves the 10 games, but for the first round of the playoffs too? I think that's a little excessive. Chara almost fucking murdered someone and didn't get shit, and Cooke gets a possible 17 game suspension? If Cooke injured the guy, maybe I could see it. But as far as I know, the guy is fine.

Probably needed to beat them in regulation to have any chance at the division but it's nice to beat those guys regardless. Monster games from Letang and Big Z (my favorite offseason signing).

If we win tonight and Carolina loses we clinch a playoff spot at least. Orpik may play tonight and is supposed to be back by Sunday at the latest.

Good chance to stay on a roll, and put a nail in that boring ass New Jersey team's coffin.  Having said that, I'd love to see Washington have to slog through their trap for seven games, but they're 8 pts back with 9 to play.  Not going to happen.

Video of Sid skating, disgusting backhand at the 47 second mark. Apparently he went through about an hour workout today. I predict he's back on April 10th against atlanta. Then, it's showtime folks.

Also Mr. Duff's back in the lineup tonight. Still holding out hope that hip injury caused him to suck ass early in the year. Would be nice to get some more offensive firepower for down the stretch.

Nice. They suck, but give me them over Montreal or the Rangers in the first round any day. Good little tune up series.

Also, if I lived in NJ and had to be a Devils fan I'd fucking give up watching hockey.  Opened up a little bit in the third but, wow, I hate the fucking trap. Lame shit. But I loved grinding those assholes to a pulp.

He centered the 5th line at practice with Godard and Tangradi on the wings. Doubt any of them are going to play. Good bet that they dress Engelland tonight though.

They looked good for the first 15 minutes then like dogshit thereafter. Pens had a phenominal scoring  chance up 2-1 but they fucked it up (i still dont know how they didn't score). If it goes to 3-1 there, who knows.

You are correct in your assumption that neither the defense or fluery were sharp. I actually hope they sit down fluery here for a game or two. The guys been playing a fuckton and looks like he needs a night off. Saturday against Florida would be a good choice.

Lines at the morning skate today:

Neal-Letestu-Kovalev
Kunitz-Staal-Kennedy
Duper-Talbot-Conner
Rupp-Adams-Duffman

Duffman replaces Asham on the 4th line, probably miscast there but whatever.

Also, apparently Rossi jumped the gun on Crosby "practicing" with the team. I gotta stop posting his tweets, he's about as reliable as my gameday predictions.

I can't believe they are still in the running for #2 with all the injuries and such. Disco Dan has to win coach of the year. Saw a good portion of the Philly/Ottawa game last night and Philly was really outplayed. Not saying they're dead by any means but the short offseason might be taking it's toll, they just look worn the hell out.

Friday should be interesting. People are expecting a big brawl like last time but I honestly think we'll see a staged Gillies v. Godard/Engelland and that'll be it for the night. Just get the 2 points and get the hell out.

We'll know beforehand if Sunday means anything obviously. Clinched home-ice for round one at least. Nice to see the Rangers circling the drain as well, I really wouldn't want to have to deal with Lunquist in round 1.
