Steelers rookie Spence has torn ligaments in knee
August 31, 2012 1:32 pm
By Gerry Dulac / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Rookie linebacker Sean Spence has multiple torn ligaments in his left knee and is expected to miss the remainder of the season, a source told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Spence, the team's third-round draft choice, was injured near the end of the third quarter in Thursday night's final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.
The injury immediately appeared to be significant when the Steelers' medical staff placed a vacuum cast on his leg to stabilize his knee. Spence was carted from the field, a towel draped over his head, and taken to a local hospital.
Spence was scheduled to be a backup inside linebacker and special-teams contributor this season. Without Spence, and with Stevenson Sylvester still recovering from a tear of his medial collateral ligament, the Steelers will begin the season without their top backups at inside linebacker.
Veteran free-agent Brandon Johnson, who played the past four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, will replace Spence.

The Spence injury sucks. Plain and simple. With Sylvester hobbling, we're pretty damned thin at ILB, to say nothing of OLB.
Looks like
Adrian Robinson makes the 53
, tho no word on the rest of the final cut. We'll probably scour waivers for LBs, too.
