Steelers Analysis:

The Steelers really had a golden opportunity this week with 3 teams with a higher draft pick all winning (the Vikings, Giants, and Jaguars - and the Bucs play tonight), but they proved that they can't even lose right this season and won their game against the Bills. This dropped their draft pick from a four-way tie for the 7th pick to a four-way tie for the 10th pick. If they had lost, then they would be 2-7 and in a four way tie for the 5th pick.

Upcoming Games:
  • Week 10: 11/11/2013 8:40PM: Dolphins @ Bucs: Tampa Bay won 22-19...uh oh.
  • Week 11: 11/14/2013 8:25PM: Colts @ Titans: Root for the Titans.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Jets @ Bills: Root for the Bills.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Falcons @ Bucs: Root for the Falcons (see analysis for above game).
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Lions @ Steelers: I don't see how the Steelers can deal with the Lions offense (all of it) or their Defensive line in this game. Ben may leave this one early since Suh loves to put QBs out anyway. All signs point to the Steelers losing a blowout in this game...so expect them to win 10-6. *sigh*
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Redskins @ Eagles: Root for the Redskins.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Cardinals @ Jaguars: Root for the Jaguars
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Raiders @ Texans: Doesn't really matter. Both teams suck equally.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Ravens @ Bears: Root for the Bears (like you'd ever root for the Ravens)
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Browns @ Bengals: Root for the Browns (it will be hard...I know)
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 4:05PM: Chargers @ Dolphins: Root for the Dolphins since the Chargers are a better team and the Dolphins may be starting a free-fall (hopefully not)
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 4:25PM: Packers @ Giants: Root for the Giants and hope the supporting cast of Green Bay can pull out some wins in the rest of the season even without Rogers
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 4:25PM: Vikings at Seahawks: Root for the Vikings (yeah right)
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 4:25PM: 49ers @ Saints: Doesn't really matter. Both teams are light years ahead of the Steelers in talent and there is no chance that they will lose enough games to matter.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 8:30PM: Chiefs @ Broncos: Doesn't really matter. Both teams are light years ahead of the Steelers in talent and there is no chance that they will lose enough games to matter.
  • Week 11: 11/18/2013 8:40PM: Patriots @ Carolina: Doesn't really matter, so root for the Panthers so you don't have to root for the Pats. Both teams are light years ahead of the Steelers in talent and there is no chance that they will lose enough games to matter.

True dat.  It was a useless win.  I expect Megatron to put up 250 yds and 3 TDs next week.  Maybe the Vikes and Giants will win again next week and  ATL is probably due.

Steelers Analysis:

The Steelers managed to win their game this week that they, by all analysis, probably should have lost. This again dropped their draft pick from a four-way tie for the 10th pick to an 8-way tie for the 15th pick. This actually puts the Steelers back in contention for a playoff spot as they are  sitting tied (with 6 other AFC teams) for the 8th position in the conference (and tied for 2nd in the AFC North with the Browns and Ravens - albeit 3 wins behind the Bengals). They are two spots back since the final wild card spot is a tie between the Jets and Dolphins. The Jets are currently in and the Dolphins are out. The Steelers are only one win back from being in that same tie.

What all of this means is that the Steelers will find a way to lose a game that they should win on their way to a 7-9 record (approximately), which will leave them out of the playoffs, but without a good draft pick next year to begin the highly necessary rebuilding of the talent on this team on both sides of the football.

In looking over their remaining schedule (@Browns, @Ravens, Dolphins, Bengals, @Packers, Browns), I could see them losing every game remaining. As it stands today, they will probably be the underdog in all their games except the Dolphins and Browns at home. The reality is that they will win some of these games and maybe enough of them to be in the race at the end of the season. Ultimately, though, I do not think the Steelers are good enough to make the playoffs this year and are definitely not good enough to make a run in the playoffs if they manage to squeak in. As mentioned earlier by another poster in another thread, the worst possible scenario for this team is to end up Mediocre, but that seems to be exactly where they are headed.

Previous Game Results:
  • Week 10: 11/11/2013 8:40PM: Dolphins @ Bucs: Tampa Bay won 22-19...uh oh.
  • Week 11: 11/14/2013 8:25PM: Colts @ Titans: Colts won 30-27...uh oh.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Jets @ Bills: Bills won 37-14...yeah.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Falcons @ Bucs: Bucs won 41-28...uh oh.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Lions @ Steelers: Steelers won 37-27...uh oh.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Redskins @ Eagles: Eagles won 24-16...uh oh.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Cardinals @ Jaguars: Cardinals won 27-14...uh oh.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Raiders @ Texans: Raiders won 28-23...didn't matter.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Ravens @ Bears: Bears won 23-20...yeah.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 1:00PM: Browns @ Bengals: Bengals won 41-20...uh oh.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 4:05PM: Chargers @ Dolphins: Dolphins won 20-16...yeah.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 4:25PM: Packers @ Giants: Giants won 27-13...yeah.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 4:25PM: Vikings at Seahawks: Seahawks won 41-20...uh oh.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 4:25PM: 49ers @ Saints: Saints won 23-20...didn't matter.
  • Week 11: 11/17/2013 8:30PM: Chiefs @ Broncos: Broncos won 27-17...didn't matter.
  • Week 11: 11/18/2013 8:40PM: Patriots @ Carolina: Panthers won 24-20...didn't matter, but yeah.

Upcoming Games:
  • Week 12: 11/21/2013 8:25PM: Saints @ Falcons: Root for the Saints.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 1:00PM: Bucs @ Lions: Root for the Lions.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 1:00PM: Vikings @ Packers: Root for the Packers.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 1:00PM: Jaguars @ Texans: Root for the Texans since it is more likely that the Steelers can catch them than the Jags who probably will have the first pick.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 1:00PM: Chargers @ Chiefs: Root for the Chiefs.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 1:00PM: Panthers @ Dolphins: Root for the Panthers.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 1:00PM: Steelers @ Browns: This is the one that the Steelers should win to continue their streak, but will probably lose on their way to a middling draft pick and no playoff appearance.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 1:00PM: Bears @ Rams: Root for the Bears.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 1:00PM: Jets @ Ravens: Root for the...hmmmm...tough one. Probably the Ravens for draft pick reasons (unclear which team for playoff reasons) to try to get both teams records ahead of the Steelers. From a personal standpoint, of course the Jets.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 4:05PM: Titans @ Raiders: Both of these teams have the same record (and both of them are tied with the Steelers) - e.g. all three suck equally. Because of that fact, it doesn't really matter here. Root for the Raiders since the Titans are hopefully a little better of a team throughout the rest of the season.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 4:05PM: Colts @ Cardinals: Both teams will probably finish with better records than the Steelers, so it probably doesn't matter. Root for the Cardinals just in case.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 4:25PM: Cowboys at Giants: Root for the Giants.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 8:30PM: Broncos @ Patriots: Doesn't really matter, so root for the Broncos so you don't have to root for the Pats. Both teams are light years ahead of the Steelers in talent and there is no chance that they will lose enough games to matter.
  • Week 12: 11/25/2013 8:40PM: 49ers @ Redskins: Root for the 49ers.

Here's the thing:  With Haley running the show his way and the defense being what it is, the Steelers are terrible. With Ben kind of getting his way, it actually gives them a chance to win. Thereby raising this team to the same level as most of the league. Mediocrity reigns.

So 15 is about where one might expect the Steelers to draft. Which is a darn shame, since they need a chance to get that player that can lift them just above mediocre. As you know, you don't have to be great these days, just "above mediocre" is a chance at the Super Bowl.

Steelers Analysis:

The Steelers beat the browns 27-11 this week and extended their winning streak to 3 games. They have won 5 of their last 7 games and are actually looking like a team worth watching again. Their draft position again fell after the win, but only from 15 to 17; however, they are now tied with 6 other AFC teams at 5-6. This is actually good enough for 6th in the conference and while they do not currently have the tie-breaker to hold the last playoff spot currently (Tennessee does), some would say that out of the 6 teams, they are the favorite to end up with it. I can't disagree at this point with the way they have been playing. They certainly have the best QB out of those teams (ranked as follows IMO - Roethlisberger, Rivers, Flacco, Tannehill, Fitzpatrick, and Smith).

With all of this information in mind, this thread is going to change a little bit. I will still list all of the teams draft positions just to keep track of it throughout the season, but I am doing away with which teams to root for in the upcoming games since the criteria may change depending on whether you are going for the draft pick, winning the division, or making the playoffs. If there is anything worth mentioning in that regard, I will try to put it into the analysis section. I am also adding sections for the Current League Standings and Playoff Picture.

Week 13 is huge for the AFC playoff picture with the Steelers and Ravens playing on Thanksgiving, and Sunday games that include the Titans @ Colts, Dolphins @ Jets, Bengals @ Chargers, Broncos @ Chiefs. If the Steelers can beat the Ravens, and the chargers beat the Bengals, the Steelers could find themselves right back into the division race and improve their position in the Wild card race. There are also some big games with playoff implications in the NFC. Packers @ Lions on Thanksgiving is huge for the NFC North Division race with the Packers trying to stay afloat until Rogers returns from injury. Sunday games include the Cardinals @ Eagles and Rams @ 49ers which could be big for the Wild Card race. Finally, the Monday night matchup Saints @ Seahawks could determine who has home field advantage throughout the playoffs in the NFC.

Previous Game Results:
  • Week 12: 11/21/2013 8:25PM: Saints @ Falcons: Saints won 17-13...yeah.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 1:00PM: Bucs @ Lions: Bucs won 24-21...uh oh.
  • Week 12: 11/24/2013 1:00PM: Vikings @ Packers: Ended in 26-26 Tie...interesting.

OK Chris. Now that we have practiced kissing and cuddling, we'll practice eating out...at a fancy restaurant.

Forgot to mention, I respectfully disagree with this mentality.  Yeah, it'd be nice to have a high pick, but that's no guarantee that (1) the draft pick turns out to be a stud or (2) the team will go from good to great because of him.  And, that's not even factoring in other variables that they can't control like injuries.

It sucks that they started out 0-4, but I'll be goddamned if I write the season off because of it.  Week to week.  Game to game.  Just.  Win.
